Austin Travel Guide

As you know if you’ve been following me for any length of time, I like to be honest and share what’s going on in my life. Last year, Joe and I were strongly considering moving to Austin, Texas. We took a weekend trip there a year ago. I honestly thought I’d post the video and photos from our trip when we announced our move. Unfortunately things didn’t work out the way we’d hoped. For a number of work-related reasons, it was complicated for us to move there with solid jobs in place. When Joe got the offer for his current job in California, we moved out a month later. I’ve held onto the footage and photos but haven’t felt ready to look at the memories from our trip. I’ve recently come to accept that it may have not worked out right now but it could happen in the future. We both love Austin and I want to share everything we did here [minus the footage about potentially moving there]! Hopefully this Austin travel guide helps you if you want to visit! Check out my video for 13 spots to visit in Austin.

WHERE TO STAY

We stayed at the Best Western Plus Austin Airport Inn & Suites. We were on a tight budget at the time and this option was cheaper than Best Westerns closer to downtown. The room was clean and spacious. They served a solid breakfast with Texas-shaped waffles!

GETTING AROUND

We opted for a rental car, which was the easiest option by far. Austin doesn’t have much in the way of public transportation. It’s also spread out so you don’t really have the option to walk or bike [especially with the humidity and unpredictable weather]. If you’re staying in the downtown area, you could just take Uber or Lyft but we wanted to explore further. Renting a car was the perfect option for our itinerary.

HOW TO PACK

If you’re visiting in the summer (like we did), expect hot and humid weather. Also be prepared for unexpected rain. We wore lightweight, breathable clothes – dress for me and t-shirt and shorts for Joe. Have your sunglasses and hats ready too! Grab an umbrella or find shelter for random rainstorms [usually brief]. Make sure to pack comfortable shoes too, especially if you want to hit a bunch of spots. Also pack a swimsuit if you plan to check out Barton Springs or Lady Bird Lake.

MUST SEE ATTRACTIONS

I’m sharing a bunch of places to check out in my latest video. Honestly my top places that you shouldn’t miss out on are: Barton Springs, Congress Bridge Bats, and Mt. Bonnell Terrace.

WHERE TO EAT

Another reason you should check out my video! My top picks were Rudy’s BBQ and Austin Eastciders. I highly recommend getting BBQ for at least one meal. I was a little underwhelmed with the hyped Torchy’s Tacos, although I will say the queso was great.
