The Fairmont in San Francisco has been on my list to places to stay for a while. Over the holidays, I checked out their life size gingerbread house, which solidified my interest in this historic hotel. The Fairmont opened in the 1940’s and there are still fun gems around the property, including old phones and keys. Joe and I chose to stay here on my birthday this year and had a blast and it only felt fitting to share my Fairmont hotel review.
LOCATION
San Francisco, CA [Nob Hill area]
GUEST ROOM
We selected a standard queen room and stayed for one night. The room was spacious enough for being in the city. Our view was a little disappointing – we faced some buildings and it looked like construction was going on. The bed was comfortable and there was a bathtub – always a perk. Overall I’d book a similar room in the future but would love to stay in a suite at some point.
AMENITIES
There is a $25 destination fee (per day, per room) for guests. This fee includes access to the gym (minus classes), wifi, and a nightly happy hour. The happy hour happens every evening from 5-6PM and includes wine, cheese, and even local honey [from the beehives behind me in the photo]. We paid separately for valet parking, which was $75 for 24 hours.
DINING
The Fairmont features three restaurants and I managed to visit two of them during my stay. We partially stayed at the Fairmont because we wanted to visit the Tonga Room for my birthday dinner. While you don’t need to stay at the hotel to dine here, it does come with some perks. As a guest, you are able to make a reservation [you can only make a reservation for a party of 10+ if you’re not a guest]. You also don’t have to pay the $10/person cover when the music starts around 8PM. We also mentioned that it was my birthday when we made the reservation and they gave us an amazing experience! They seated us with a perfect view of the boat/performance. The server wished me a happy birthday, let me change my drink order after my original drink arrived and brought me a free birthday dessert. The service was fantastic and they certainly went above and beyond to make me feel special.
I also got a chance to visit Laurel Court [near the lobby] for breakfast. I opted for the breakfast buffet. The setting was nice and it was calm in the restaurant. It was good but nothing too special. They had an omelette station, pastries, hot breakfast items, yogurt, and fruit in addition to orange juice and coffee. It was around $40 so it didn’t quite seem worth the price tag [in my opinion]. I’d maybe try the afternoon tea but I likely won’t visit for breakfast again.
