As someone who has sent their fair share of holiday cards, I feel qualified to offer up some of my best practices. This post is meant to serve as your guide to spreading holiday cheer with festive cards. Thank you, Basic Invite, for sponsoring today’s post. Holiday Card Etiquette with Basic Invite
Who should I send holiday cards to?
Send holiday cards to everyone important to you. Family members, friends and close coworkers can all make the list. Don’t feel pressured to send holiday cards to everyone though! They are a nice gesture but you shouldn’t feel consumed making sure you don’t miss anyone.
Should I send holiday cards to my colleagues?
It depends on your relationship with your colleagues. If you’re close to someone socially, I definitely think you could send them a card. For an important business partner, it’s up to your comfort level. I’m sure they’d appreciate the sentiment but I doubt they’re expecting anything. If you want to keep business and personal relationships separate, you could send different cards. Opt for a family photo for friends and something more generic for colleagues.
What should I say in my holidays cards?
That’s up to you! You can keep it simple, share an update on your year, or send well wishes for the holiday season. I often keep my holiday cards simple with “Merry Christmas” or “have a joyous holiday”. This year I’m looking back at some of my favorite memories over the years, from engagement to anniversary photos. In the past, I’ve included updates on my year, such as my Thailand trip in 2019. There is no right or wrong with holiday card messaging.
When should I send holiday cards?
Personally I believe you can send holiday cards any time from early November through early January. If you are sending cards out internationally, it’s ideal to mail them a few weeks early. Getting a late start on ordering holiday cards this year? Send them out for the new year!
How should I address cards? What is the proper formality to use on addresses?
It’s up to you! It isn’t necessary to include formal titles on holiday cards. If you’re sending a card to entire family, I suggest writing: The Last Name Family. This includes all children that live at home. For children who no longer live with their parents, it’s appropriate to send them individual cards, if you’re close with them. It’s also important to print addresses clearly. While cursive or calligraphy may look nice, it’s important to make sure addresses are legible. Also, make sure to include your return address. You may just receive some holiday cards in return š
